Should I Renew my Apartment Rental Lease or Relocate?

There is something to be said for having a good relationship with both your landlord and your neighbors.  Unfortunately, it’s not always a guarantee that you and your landlord will see eye to eye or that you will end up lucky enough to find neighbors who will happily watch your cat while you are away.  Good neighbors and a strong foundation with your landlord or management company could be a great reason to stay put.  On the flip side, if you are constantly struggling with one or both, it could be time to start looking elsewhere.

Pets

Not all apartment rentals are willing to embrace your furry friends.  This is particularly true if you have a large breed dog or more than one creature.  Most apartment buildings have strict rules in place regarding which breed, how many, and what size animals will be welcome on their property.  If you plan on bringing your cuddly companion with you, you will certainly want to do your research before you start packing.

Negotiability

If you’ve been in your rental apartment for some time, you may have the option to negotiate your lease as it comes time for renewal.  Landlords are interested in tenant retention, particularly if you have established a solid reputation with them.  They are much less likely to willingly let a quality tenant walk away if they know that they can do something simple to get them to stay.  In other words, see if you can negotiate your renewal in your favor before making your final decision.
