Everything You Need to Consider Before Searching for the Right Rental Apartment

Searching for the right rental apartment can certainly be a fun undertaking, but it can also lead to some serious overwhelm if you don’t know what you are looking for.  Before beginning your search for the perfect space, take some time to get clear on what you need and want.  Read on to determine the guidelines that will help you clarify what makes a house a home to you.

The Right Size

Most apartment communities will offer a variety of sizes and floorplans that they will be able to show you.  Before you begin touring, it’s helpful to know about what size you would like your rental apartment to be.  Do you plan on having a roommate?  Do you plan on having more than one?  Living with roommates can be super awesome or super awful, so make sure that if you plan on cohabitating, you are clear on your boundaries.  Also, remember that more space will often result in more upkeep and higher associated bills.  These may range from the initial security deposit to the utility and cable bills.  The perk of a larger space and roommates, however, is that you won’t be handling these extra responsibilities all on your own.

Perfect Price

Searching for the Right Rental ApartmentA larger rental apartment will likely come with a higher price tag than smaller units within the same community.  It can be tempting to get drawn into the benefits of a larger space before you’ve taken a close look at your budget, so it makes sense that you should absolutely know what price range you are looking in before you start.  Remember that the price doesn’t just pertain to the monthly rent, but also to the additional costs that are associated with living on your own.  Some apartment communities will include certain utilities in the monthly cost of the unit, such as internet, cable, water, and/or trash removal.  Others will not.

The Perfect Amenities

The perfect rental apartment will likely offer some creature comforts that have you feeling more at home.  These can range from on-site gym facilities, swimming pools, or tennis courts, to more grandiose amenities such as on-site cafes, movie theaters, and game rooms.  Don’t discount the less exciting amenities either, such as access to on-site laundry facilities, free Wi-Fi, or clubhouses.  All of these things are sure to affect the quality of your stay at your apartment, but remember; the more amenities, the greater the price tag.

Upgrades

If you’re looking for a more modern rental apartment, paying close attention to what upgrades you are seeking will be important.  An upgraded unit might offer things such as vaulted ceilings, hardwood flooring, granite countertops, walk-in closets, or private balconies.

The Perfect Landlord

Your landlord will inevitably have a relatively large impact on how satisfied you are at your rental apartment, and all landlords are not created equally.  Before starting the search for your perfect space, do some research on some of your top community picks in the area.  Read reviews on the landlord or management company, peruse their websites or call them to get a better understanding of their policies and procedures, or ask friends who are living/have lived in the community in question.  You will want to know how disputes are handled, what their pet policy is, and what their grounds are for eviction.  This will be particularly important if this is your first time living on your own.  Establishing a good rapport with your landlord right off the bat is the key to a successful leasing experience.

Location

Among the most important factors you will want to weigh into your decision is the location of your rental apartment.  Make sure that the area where you begin your search is close to the places that you visit regularly, such as school, work, restaurants, or social activities.  If you find that the cost of living in the area is too high for you, you can always expand your search to find a space that is in closer proximity to public transportation.

Parking

Determine early on whether or not you intend to take a car with you to your new rental.  If so, you will want to look in communities that offer designated parking to their tenants.  Nothing is more frustrating than circling the block for an hour while you try to find off-street parking.
