Establishing a Strong Relationship with a Roommate in an Apartment Rental

Learning to live with a roommate in a new apartment rental can be both a lot of fun and a lot of work at the same time!  It doesn’t really matter how well you think you knew the person before you became housemates, you’re bound to learn a lot more about them (some things that you will like and others that you may not).  In an effort to ensure that your friendships are not only intact, but perhaps even better, once your lease has ended, there are some ground rules you should follow to make your living situation a successful one!

Set Clear Boundaries About the Space

When you move into a new apartment rental, it can be tempting to think that you can treat the entire place as your own private castle.  If you have a roommate, however, you’ll want to make sure that you get very specific about personal space.  The likelihood is strong that you will not want your roomie entering your bedroom and/or bathroom without your permission and it is also likely that the sentiment is shared.  If any other areas of your shared home are to be designated for only one of you, be sure to make that known up front!

Have Household Roommate Meetings

It might seem silly to hold household meetings, but doing so can be the factor that makes or breaks a roommate relationship.  Having a time each week to check-in will help you to stay aware of the other persons schedule, discuss any time where you may need to have the space to yourself, and address anything that is bothering you, which brings us to the next point.

Open and honest roommateBe Open & Honest With Roommates

Clear, open and honest communication is a must if you want to have a successful relationship with your apartment rental roommate.  Don’t wait until something is bothering you so much that you feel as if you are going to explode with frustration and anger.  Approach your roommate with concerns or questions in a way that is calm, kind and respectful and you will surely be able to find a solution that works for both of you.

Divide the Chores Evenly

The quickest way to lead to one roommate feeling less than satisfied with the new living arrangement is if that person is doing all of the work associated with upkeep of the apartment rental.  Before you even move in, sit down and discuss who will be responsible for doing which chores throughout the house.  Maybe one person does the same thing each week or perhaps you trade off week to week.  Either way, it is imperative to share the chores just like you share the space.

Divide the Bills as Well

Nothing can cause an argument quite as fast as a dispute about finances.  Remember that sharing a space also means sharing a large financial responsibility with another human being.  That means that both of you will need to be fully accountable for the monies you owe in relation to the apartment rental.  The conversation should be had well in advance of move-in day to determine how you will split the bills.  Once that is figured out, you will also want to discuss how payment arrangements will be made.  For example, will one of you pay the rent in full and the other will be responsible for reimbursing for their half?  How will that money be transferred?  Which date will it be due upon?  Get crystal clear on your finances and you will be off to a great start.

Clean Up After Yourself

Nobody wants a messy roommate…except, perhaps, an equally messy roommate.  If you don’t want one, don’t be one!  Sharing a space can have enough stress factors without worrying about cleaning up after one another.  Be accountable and always leave the space the way you found it.

Honor the Boundaries You Have Set

Finally, if there are ground rules that you have asked your roommate to adhere to during your time in the apartment rental, don’t be a hypocrite.  Take your own advice and hold yourself to the same standards as you are holding them.  Make sure that what you are requesting, you are also offering in return.  Modeling your own best behavior is a great way to ensure that your roomie will do the same.
